Spencer Wells

Spencer Wells was born in 1969 and grew up in Texas, USA. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1994, focusing on population genetics and evolution. He subsequently moved to Stanford University as a post-doctoral fellow where he worked with Luca Cavalli-Sforza. While there he began his work on the genetics of human populations in Central Asia, which he continued after moving to Oxford University in 1999. Under the direction of Sir Walter Bodmer, he led the population genetics research group at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics at Oxford. After leaving Oxford, he served as Director of Population Genetics at an American biotechnology company. He continues to act as a consultant to the biotechnology industry and holds a visitng appointment at Harvard School of Public Health. Dr Wells is author or co-author of over thirty scientific publications, and has received grants and fellowships from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the National Science Foundation, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and NATO. He lives in East Anglia with his wife and two children.
